IASSW supports the “Boot Out Austerity” march in the United Kingdom
Last week, a group of UK based social work practitioners, educators and students organised a 100-mile walk, from Birmingham to Liverpool, in order to protest against austerity and its catastrophic impact on Social Services.
These colleagues, mostly organised around the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), drew inspiration from the iconic Jarrow marchers of 1936, when members of the devastated by poverty community of Jarrow walked from North of England to London to protest against unemployment and inequality.
IASSW would like to endorse this initiative and commend it as an excellent example of collective action against “the public causes of private pains”.
IASSW’s Chair of Human Rights, Vasilios Ioakimidis, joined the event and in his speech expressed our associations’ solidarity with anti-austerity marchers.
