World Social Work Day at the UN in Geneva 2025

Wednesday, March 19, 202510 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.Online

International Social Work Day Disability

Entitled ” Care societies for everyone: Advancing the social rights of people living with disabilities,” the day aims to raise awareness, mobilize political actors, and devise solutions to build supportive and sustainable societies. People with disabilities, whether temporary or permanent, experience greater poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion. Their needs are often overlooked in development and humanitarian aid initiatives. They face barriers to accessing social services, employment, independent living, their legal rights, and civic participation. Furthermore, they remain underrepresented in decision-making and political life (UN, 2018).

The 2025 International Social Work Day, which will be held online, has three objectives:

  • Raise awareness of the rights of people living with disabilities and the role that social work plays in supporting them and their families, creating more inclusive and caring societies;
  • Identify current challenges faced by people living with disabilities and their caregivers locally and globally, and devise ways to address them;
  • Help mobilize political actors at the upcoming World Summit for Social Development (WSSD) on how to create inclusive care systems and ensure that people living with disabilities can develop their full potential and receive the support they need.

The celebration of World Social Work Day 2025 will feature contributions from social work and science from different regions of the world. Through lectures, interactive discussions, and a panel discussion, we will explore pathways toward more just and sustainable shared futures and discuss how social work can collaborate with the UN to promote the rights of people living with disabilities and build comprehensive care systems.

The event is aimed at officials from international organizations, social work students and professionals, as well as anyone interested in innovative approaches to building a sustainable future.
